Dusty in March

Hello friends! I'm back with you today to share my creation for the March mood board over at The Dusty Attic. Are you going to give the challenge a go this month? You could win a $100 Dusty Attic voucher! Be quick though - you don't have much time left!

Here's my layout:

The colours in this are so different to my usual colour choices but I love them! Here's the mood board. Now you'll see why I chose these colours.

I was influenced by the colours, the 'journey' theme (I used the mood board wording as my title) and the photo second from the left at the bottom (I added hessian under my globe chippie then tied it in place with string.)

My son left home last month to go to uni and, as much as it was heartbreaking to see him go, I was so proud of him because he was so confident about it. I thought he would be terrified but he was very casual about it all and has had a ball at uni. As parents, I think we sometimes worry over nothing!

The wording on the mood board was so appropriate for this layout that I tore it out and added it as my title

There are lots of different chippies on this page. I found I had to limit myself so as not to overwhelm the photo!

There is lot of mixed media on this page. The hessian was an afterthought and it covered a lot of the background work up. Still, I opted to go with it cos I liked it!

The background paper is from Fabrika Dekoru. Isn't it gorgeous?

The Dusty Attic products I used are:
Creative Script Stencil DA1495

Cogs Stencil DA1328

Dusty in Colour - Hot Chocolate DA0923

Around the World DA1036

Vintage Keys DA0392

Trellis Large DA1031
(I used both the trellis and the diamonds from the centres)

Argyle Panel Small DA1011
(I used the diamonds from the centres only)

Paris Post Mark DA0320

Him & Her Border DA1065

It's Mini Challenge Time at More Than Words!

Hello there. Are you ready for the March Mini Challenge over at More Than Words!

Continuing on with my recent ATC addiction, here's what I made for the challenge:

So have you guessed the challenge word yet? Yep! It's 'Happy"! And can you guess why I wrote these particular words? If you're a regular follower of my blog you will probably know but scroll down to the end of this post if you're not sure ;)

There are heaps of layers on this one, each using different products. There are Magicals, then gesso through a Dusty Attic stencil, then Colour Blast paste through a different Dusty Attic stencil, then paints, pen and a few different Dusty attic chippies. Phew!

Here's how the Mini Challenge works:

The Mini Challenge runs on the last week of each month and is for cards, tags and ATCs only. (ATCs, or Artist Trading Cards, are small works of art, about 2.5 by 3.5 inches or 64 x 89mm). This challenge requires you to use a specific word on your project. We must see the actual word. You have only one week - until the last day of the month - to enter, so be quick!

Entry for the Mini Challenge is only via our Facebook page under the relevant post.

The winner will receive a $25 voucher from Dusty Attic, our fabulous Mini Challenge sponsor. And just to sweeten the deal, all our prizes include free shipping to anywhere in the world!

I sure hope you can join in!

Happy scrappin'!

My PaperArts Classes

Hello again! To all the Aussie girls, have you heard about the Melbourne PaperArts Expo? It's coming up on the 8th to 10th of April at the Showgrounds. It's a brand new expo and is being run by the same people that run the huge Scrapbooking Expo in Brisbane.

I'll be teaching 3 classes. I'm very lucky to have The Dusty Attic and Tinby Designs as sponsors for the classes.

Class 1
In this class we will make Five Fast, Fabulous Layouts. Yep - five layouts! I will be teaching techniques to help you speed up the scrapping process while still creating fabulous pages and playing with fun products!

Class 2
This class is almost the opposite to the first class! We make one superb layout (or cards if you prefer). We will be playing with some very cool techniques and products and will be utilising Artist Trading Cards. I'll be showing what you can do with ATCs and how to use these little gems in all sorts of ways.

Class 3
This class is the same concept as Class 1 - Five Fast, Fabulous Layouts - however they will be five completely different layouts using different products and techniques. Students can do both classes or either one.

The other amazing tutors are Beck Beattie, Fiona Paltridge, Kerrie Gurney and Natalie May.

I sure hope you can join us. You can find the bookings page HERE.

Any questions, feel free to PM me - or you can ask a question in the comments below if you prefer.

Happy scrappin'!

Make Your Chippies Look Like Wood

Hello there! I'm here today to share a step by step process showing how to alter your chippies to make them look like wood, plus I've been playing with the new Colour Blast products that are now being distributed by The Dusty Attic.

Here's my layout:

Yes! I used purple! We received some fabulous Colour Blast products to try and I received some purple spray. More on this later in the post.

I really wanted to make my chippies look like the wood used in the sculptures. You might be able to see here in the close ups how the chippies reflect the same variation in colour that the sculptures do. They are not just all the same brown. (The first photo looks like it has a crackle effect but it's just the light playing tricks.)

Here's how I treated the chippies. Note that this demo piece is a much smaller version of the scroll that I used in my layout.

Step 1

Randomly apply gesso to about three-quarters of the surface of the chippie. Just use your finger - variation in texture is good!

Step 2

Stamp Timber Brown StazOn ink heavily over about half to three-quarters of the chippie.

Step 3

Apply Vintage Photo Distress Ink over the whole surface.

Step 4

Now here's my secret weapon - while the Distress Ink is still wet, coat with Dusty Attic's Clear Gloss Varnish. As you apply the Varnish, the wet ink will bleed and give a beautiful mottled appearance. Leave to dry for at least a couple of hours.

I also used Clear Gloss Varnish to coat my title. I use this product for everything! You can find it here.

To create my background, I used ink through a Dusty Attic script stencil. For some reason, this stencil just seems to work with any type of layout! I then sprayed Colour Blast spray over the areas behind my photos and journalling. This spray is really light - perfect for when you just want a subtle touch of colour.

I spread Colour Blast Colour Paste through the Dusty Attic butterfly stencil. The Colour Paste adds an incredible shimmer! It comes in a gorgeous array of colours too. You can find the Colour Blast products here.

The Dusty Attic products I used are:
Scroll #8 DA0626

Typewriter ABC Set DA0143

Creative Script Stencil DA1494

Stencil Butterflight DA1493

Dusty In Bloom Bridal Veil DA0805

Dusty in Colour Clear Gloss varnish DA 0901

The Colour Blast products I used are:
Colour Paste in 'Apple of my Eye'
Colour Spray in 'Lovely Lilac'

The March 'More Than Words' Challenge

Hello there! It's a new month and that means the new challenge at More Than Words is up on the blog! You can find the challenge here. I'd like to thank all of you that have entered so far. We are so pleased that you seem to like it as much as we do!

Here's what I made for the March challenge:

The inspiration word this month is "Bliss". What does the word "Bliss" inspire you to create? The creative challenge to go with it is to use Gesso on your project. Here's the gorgeous challenge board.

I'd love to see what this inspires you to create!

The word "Bliss" made me think of my recent summer holiday at the beach. I had such a fantastic time relaxing with family and friends. We went for walks in the rainforest, we rode boogie-boards in the surf and ate plenty of ice-creams!

I used Gesso behind my photo and under my watercolour work. I also used multiple die-cuts of the word "Bliss" behind my photo for something different.

I sure hope you can join in this month!

Happy scrappin'!
